Within hours of the High Court announcing that the Andrews Government had botched legislation keeping Russell Street bomber and cop killer Craig Minogue behind bars, he promptly began tweeting and making an audio statement via telephone to an external party which was then recorded and re-broadcast on the internet and social media.
A Liberal Nationals Government will ensure that prisoners who participate in having their telephone conversations recorded and rebroadcast in anyway, will lose their telephone access rights and be banned from making or receiving telephone calls for 6 to 12 months, with the exception of nominated legal representatives and the Ombudsman.
Further, any person who is involved in assisting a prisoner by recording and re-broadcasting their telephone conversations, including on the internet or social media, will be removed from all approved prisoner call lists for life. In addition, any such person will be subject to a monetary penalty of $10,000.
Only a Liberal Nationals Government will introduce the tough on crime laws to strengthen our corrections system.
Comments attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:
“For violent criminals like Craig Minogue, phone calls with friends are a privilege and not a right.
If prisoners like Craig Minogue want to broadcast their vile rants, they’ll lose these privileges under my government.”
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Corrections, Edward O’Donohue:
“Daniel Andrews keeps trying to talk tough on law and order, but his lack of action speaks louder than his words.
Victims and their loved ones from the Russell Street bombing should not be forced to hear Craig Minogue’s voice and a Guy Government will ensure a zero-tolerance approach to such offensive and unacceptable prisoner behaviour.”
