A Liberal Nationals Government will work with the St Kilda community to establish a St Kilda Neighbourhood Safety Plan: a partnership to identify neighbourhood safety problems and practical solutions, well before crime escalates out of control.
To help support this community partnership, a Matthew Guy Government will invest $500,000 for CCTV cameras to help keep local residents in the St Kilda, South Melbourne, Port Melbourne and Albert Park areas safe.
In recent years, local crime has reached crisis point in some St Kilda neighbourhoods and yet Daniel Andrews and Martin Foley have sat idly by while residents are assaulted, threatened and harassed. This is simply unacceptable.
Local residents know their neighbourhood best but instead of being able to share their knowledge and work with government, they have to launch public campaigns to get local member Martin Foley’s attention, much less any help.
We need to stop the cycle of crisis after crisis in St Kilda streets, and start planning and working to make the community safer.
Quotes attributable to Leader of the Opposition, Matthew Guy:
“Only a Liberal Nationals Government will make Victoria safer.
“Under Daniel Andrews and Martin Foley, crime has increased 15.7% in St Kilda West because they have simply ignored the warning signs and failed to take action.
“Andrew Bond lives in St Kilda and is a local councillor, he knows the issues and has a track record of working with the community and developing practical solutions.”
Quotes attributable to Shadow Minister for Community Safety, Edward O’Donohue:
“Daniel Andrews has let this crime wave grip our state and only a Matthew Guy Government will deliver the tough on crime policies to smash street gangs, lock up the worst of the worst criminals, support victims and deliver the targeted local solutions to crime and perceptions of crime.
“There’s a clear choice at the next election between Daniel Andrews and his soft touch or Matthew Guy who has listened to local communities and has the solutions to address this crime wave.”
Quotes attributable to Liberal Candidate for Albert Park, Andrew Bond:
“I love St Kilda but over the last six years as a councillor I’ve seen big changes with some streets becoming no-go zones. Residents and traders are left to deal with the consequences and have repeatedly asked the Andrews Labor Government for help but without any response.
“That’s why I want to establish a St Kilda Neighbourhood Safety Plan and work with local residents on ideas and outcomes to effectively cut local violent crime.
“More of the same from this Labor Government won’t cut it, we need to think outside the box and work harder on local solutions.”
