Daniel Andrews refuses to act on lenient sentences again

For the second time this week Daniel Andrews and Labor have blocked the Liberal Nationals from re-establishing a joint house Law Reform, Sentencing and Community Safety Joint House Standing Committee that would examine and propose amendments to Victoria’s homicide, sentencing and parole laws.

Daniel Andrews axed the joint house law reform committee soon after his re-election in 2018 to avoid scrutiny.

Labor must agree to establish a Law Reform, Sentencing and Community Safety Joint House Standing Committee to investigate the adequacy of Victoria’s homicide, sentencing and parole laws.

Today the Liberal Nationals supported a move to send a Bill addressing spent convictions to the Legal and Social Issues Committee as we believe this is an important issue that the Parliament needs to address.

Despite Labor’s opposition, the Liberals and Nationals will continue to lead the push to re-establish a Law Reform, Sentencing and Community Safety Joint House Standing Committee to address Victoria’s weak sentencing laws.
